What voltage does an illuminated house number use?

Luxello illuminated house numbers use 8–12V AC or DC low voltage — not mains voltage. This makes them safe to handle, energy-efficient, compatible with solar power, and simple to install.

8–12V AC or DC — the correct voltage for LED house numbers

Luxello illuminated house numbers run on 8–12V AC or DC. The LED components operate on low voltage, supplied by a separate LED driver that accepts a 110–240V mains input. This 12V system is safe to handle, energy-efficient, and compatible with solar power systems.

ComponentVoltageNotes
LED inside the number8–12V AC or DCSafe, low voltage — no shock risk when touched

The numbers have no polarity — the two wires from each number can be connected either way to the power supply. A single power supply can illuminate up to 6 numbers simultaneously.

How much electricity do they use?

Luxello numbers use very little electricity — far less than a typical outdoor light. Power consumption varies by size: 3-inch (7.6 cm) numbers draw under 0.2W, 5-inch (12.7 cm) numbers 0.2–0.4W, 8 and 10-inch (25.4 cm) numbers 0.7–1W, and 16-inch (40.6 cm) numbers 1–1.5W.

On a dusk-to-dawn cycle (approximately 4,000 hours per year) at €0.30/kWh, running costs range from under €0.25/year for a 3-inch (7.6 cm) number to around €1.80/year for a 16-inch (40.6 cm) — a negligible cost for a permanent architectural feature.

10-year parts availability commitment. Luxello commits to keeping replacement LED panels available for all products for a minimum of 10 years from purchase. If a panel ever needs replacing, it can be ordered and fitted — the solid metal housing is built to outlast multiple LED generations.

A dusk-to-dawn photocell switch installed on the power supply will turn the numbers on automatically at night and off at dawn, reducing energy consumption by approximately 55% compared to continuous operation.

Selecting the right LED driver

Choose a driver based on your number size and how many digits you need to power. Luxello supplies three driver models: the DR1 for 3-inch (7.6 cm) and 5-inch (12.7 cm) numbers, the DR2 for 8-inch (20.3 cm) and above, and the DR3 for Triac or 0–10V dimming installations.

Number sizeMax unitsRecommended driver
3-inch (7.6 cm) numbersUp to 10 unitsDR1
3-inch (7.6 cm) numbersUp to 20 unitsDR2
5-inch (12.7 cm) numbersUp to 5 unitsDR1
5-inch (12.7 cm) numbersUp to 10 unitsDR2
8-inch (20.3 cm) numbersUp to 7 unitsDR2
10-inch (25.4 cm) numbersUp to 5 unitsDR2
16-inch (40.6 cm) numbersUp to 3 unitsDR2
24-inch (61 cm) numbersUp to 2 unitsDR2  /  DR3
36-inch (91.4 cm) numbersUp to 2 unitsDR2  /  DR3

The DR3 supports Triac and 0–10V dimming and is compatible with all number sizes. Use it where dimming control is required — home automation, smart switches, or variable-output architectural schemes. All three drivers output 12V DC.

Driver certification & ingress protection

Luxello LED drivers are independently tested and certified for each market we serve, and are supplied with the correct certification for your delivery country.

SpecificationDetail
Mains input110–240V AC, 50/60Hz — universal input, works on any European supply
Output8–12V AC or DC low voltage, no polarity
European certificationCE marked to the applicable EU harmonisation legislation
North American certificationETL listed by Intertek
Australian certificationSAA approved
Ingress protectionIP67 and IP68 rated depending on driver model

An IP67 rating means the driver withstands temporary immersion in water; IP68 means it withstands continuous immersion. Both are suitable for external installation. We still recommend mounting the driver in a protected location or weatherproof enclosure — it extends service life and keeps future access straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Luxello illuminated house numbers require a minimum of 10–12V AC or DC. The LEDs inside the number run on low voltage, supplied by a separate 12V LED driver that accepts a 110–240V mains input and steps it down to a safe 12V output. This low voltage system is safe to handle, energy-efficient, and solar compatible.
No — the numbers themselves operate at 8–12V AC or DC low voltage. Only the input side of the LED driver carries mains voltage, which is why that connection should be made by a qualified electrician. The cable between the driver and the numbers carries only safe 12V low voltage.
Power consumption varies by size: 3-inch (7.6 cm) numbers draw under 0.2W, 5-inch (12.7 cm) numbers 0.2–0.4W, 8 and 10-inch (25.4 cm) numbers 0.7–1W, and 16-inch (40.6 cm) numbers 1–1.5W. On a dusk-to-dawn cycle at €0.30/kWh, running costs range from under €0.25/year for a 3-inch (7.6 cm) number to around €1.80/year for a 16-inch (40.6 cm). Multiple numbers on a single driver add proportionally.
No — Luxello illuminated house numbers have no polarity. The two wires from each number can be connected either way to the power supply, making installation simpler. Multiple numbers can all be connected to the same driver — one driver per property is typically sufficient.
Yes — many existing doorbell transformers output 12V AC, which is compatible with Luxello illuminated house numbers. Check the output voltage of your existing transformer before connecting. If the transformer is already installed and accessible, this can be a convenient power source that avoids any additional electrical work.
